Neuromuscular Compartmentalization of the Vastus Medialis Muscle: Comparison of the Activity of the Vastus Medialis Obliquus and the Vastus Medialis Longus by High Density Electromyography

چکیده

Anatomical studies describe the vastus medialis (VM) as being subdivided into two morphologically distinct components, obliquus (VMO) and longus (VML). However, there are discrepancies regarding functional differentiation of these components. The aim this study was to compare levels activation VMO VML by high density surface electromyography. Twelve healthy young women (age: 21.4 ± 2.0 years; weight: 58.1 7.5 kg; height: 1.6 0.1 m), performed an open kinetic chain knee exercise during which EMG activity recorded with two- dimensional matrices 32 electrodes. exercises were three resistance (5, 10 15 % body weight (BW)), considering phases: concentric, isometric excentric. In phase had greater than (p<0.05). excentric phase, also showed BW levels, while in concentric only resistance. results indicated significant differences level components VM. This bears importance development intended achieve a or more selective VMO. sample subjected evaluation, recordings comparison VML, is important phases flexion/extension chain. These findings suggest compartmentalization

Spinal Reflex Arc Excitability Corresponding to the Vastus Medialis Obliquus and Vastus Medialis Longus Muscles

[Purpose] The gross morphology of the vastus medialis (VM) muscle has been thoroughly described. However, there is insufficient evidence of physiological differentiation between the VM obliquus (VMO) and VM longus (VML). To elucidate spinal reflex arc excitability in two divisions of the VM, we compared H-reflexes and T-waves in VMO and VML. [Subjects] Twenty-three healthy male volunteers parti...

Menstrual cycle mediates vastus medialis and vastus medialis oblique muscle activity.

PURPOSE Sports medicine professionals commonly describe two functionally different units of the vastus medialis (VM), the VM, and the vastus medialis oblique (VMO), but the anatomical support is equivocal. The functional difference of the VMO is principle to rehabilitation programs designed to alleviate anterior knee pain, a pathology that is known to have a greater occurrence in women. The pur...

Exploratory study of electromyographic behavior of the vastus medialis and vastus lateralis at neuromuscular fatigue onset

This study aimed to determine and analyze the neuromuscular fatigue onset by median frequency (MDF) and the root mean square (RMS) behavior of an electromyographic signal (EMG). Eighteen healthy men with no prior knee problems initially performed three maximum voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC). After two days of MVIC test, participants performed a fatiguing protocol in which they performe...

Muscle fiber changes of the vastus medialis in rheumatoid patients.

To study the pathology of muscle atrophy in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), we examined the vastus medialis in rheumatoid patients histologically. The relationship of the findings to their ambulatory ability and long-term steroid therapy was investigated. The muscles of the RA patients were also compared with those of patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Specimens of the vastus medialis were collected...
